Node cutter
A simple abstract strategery board game!
You can skip reading the rule and play!
Rules & Game Mechanics
1. Growth Parameters
- Base (home node): Maximum growth radius 4 cells, up to 6 branches.
- Regular Node: Maximum growth radius 3 cells, up to 4 branches.
2. Placing Nodes, Cutting Lines & Splitting Lines
- Cutting enemy lines: Place a new node on, or draw a new line across, a connection belonging to the ENEMY → the enemy line is CUT immediately!
- Splitting your own line (Line Split): Place a new node on a connection belonging to YOUR TEAM → the old line is automatically split into 2 lines joined to the new node, and all 3 branches are linked automatically (the source node and the two ends of the old line). If the source node is itself one end of that line, the new node is simply inserted into it (source → new node → other end) and the source keeps the same number of branches.
- You cannot place a node on top of an existing node, or draw a line straight through an existing node.
3. Reviving Dead Nodes & Loops
- Connect an ALIVE node to another ALIVE node of the same team → creates a backup loop (Loop) that makes your network more durable.
- Connect an ALIVE node to a DEAD node of the same team → REVIVES that dead node together with its whole connected sub-network!
- Direct connection limit: a node can only accept a new connection if its current branch count is below its maximum (regular node < 4 branches, Base < 6 branches). Exception: a full node can still insert a new node into one of its own lines, because the split piece replaces the old line and adds no branch.
4. Win Condition
- If it is your turn and you have no legal move (every alive node is out of branches, or has no valid destination and no own line to insert a node into) → you LOSE.
- Cut lines stay on the board and still occupy a branch slot at both ends. When all 6 slots of a Base are taken by dead lines and no other alive node remains, the Base is "smothered".
- Turn limit: every move by either player counts as one turn. If nobody has won after 300 turns, the player with more alive nodes (Bases included) wins; equal counts are a draw. The players may then play 50 more turns (the same check repeats at the new limit) or start a new game.
5. Evaluation Bar
- The bar at the top right shows the bot's static evaluation of the position, always from Blue's point of view (the bar fills from the left for Blue, from the right for Red).
- Click the bar to expand the breakdown: alive nodes, dead nodes, Base siege, mobility, loop redundancy, free Base slots, front-line advance, centre line, wide network, flank watch, weak points, siege presence, opening rush and Base room.
- It is a quick heuristic, not a search result, so it can be wrong about tactics that need deeper calculation.
6. Customizing the Match
- Press ⚙ Customize to choose who plays Blue and who plays Red: a Player or a bot (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert). Every combination is allowed, including two different bots.
- Apply keeps the current game and only changes who plays from now on; Start new game restarts with the new setup.
7. Undo, Redo & Match Files
- Every move is remembered. ↶ Undo (Ctrl+Z) and ↷ Redo (Ctrl+Y) step through the match. Against a bot, Undo takes back the bot's answer as well, so it is your turn again. A new move after an Undo discards the moves you could have redone.
- After Undo, Redo or an import the bots stay paused. Make a move yourself or press Resume bot to continue.
- History lists all moves; tap one to jump to the position after it.
- Export .txt saves the match as a text file with one line per move (turn, player, move type, from → to). Import .txt replays such a file, checks that every move is legal and rejects the file otherwise.
8. Visuals & Colors
- Live lines: drawn in the team color (Blue/Red) with a bright glow while connected to the Base.
- Dead nodes by team: P1's dead nodes are Dark Blue (#1d4ed8), P2's dead nodes are Dark Red (#b91c1c).
- Move hints: green dot (new node), purple dot (split your own line), small green ring around a node (loop), orange ring (revive a dead node).
- Selection: the selected node gets a pale gold ring and the nodes linked to it are outlined in orange (dashed if every link to them has been cut). Tap one of your dead nodes to inspect its links; the colors are then dull.
- Full nodes: a white X marks a node that has no free branch left (dead nodes included; cut lines still use up a branch).
*Note: the game can also play the game on paper (but I'm not recommended)
